गज़ब किया, तेरे वादे पे ऐतबार किया
तमाम रात क़यामत का इंतज़ार किया

It was not clear to him till the ride was nearly over why she had suggested accompanying him for their little assignment. Once she said what she did it all fell in place and it made perfect sense.

All through the early evening he could not but marvel at how attractive she was. Her smile that bloomed on her cheeks, making the high cheekbones fill-up and cover the mischief in her eyes; lopsided and so well complementing her gamin good looks. She was full-figured and of average height, but the way she comported herself more than made up for any shortness of stature. She walked tall, confident and with the royal elegance of a queen. It was the wild-witch in her hair, teased by the errant shamal however which made the ache in his heart run and itch with a vagrant hesitation to reach out to touch her.

ये खुले खुले से गेसू इन्हें लाख तू संवारे
मेरे हाथ से संवरते तो कुछ और बात होती

He was glad for the blackberry in her hand and the way she was inattentive for most of the early part of the ride; the silence between them was painful. Thinking back upon it now it was evident that it spawned the unhealthy tension between the violator and the defiled. Only this time the one wronged was far superior to the oppressor, and knew it.

The long walk, the detours, the idle chitchat and the pre-occupation with what was on her mind asking for release – none of this made for the इफ्तेदा-ई-इश्क, that breeding ground of intimacy he had been yearning these past few months . So when she did articulate what he did – about not being able to appreciate his personal comments and the unwarranted and uncalled for attention he was wont to shower on her through his missives and messages, it was a foregone conclusion. One had chosen in his ostrich-like stance to omit

Our failures and rejections in life we tend to deal with in a mindless pattern of behaviour. Thinking back on the exact way he had handled not clearing his passing out exam in the final year in college or the earliest rejection in youth of a relationship he had never really forgotten, the telltale signs were splashed all over this, the latest episode too.

हम ऐसे महव-ऐ-नज़ारा न थे जो होश आता
मगर तुम्हारे तगाफुल ने होशियार किया

"I really want to be your friend", she said as they parted in the lobby of her apartment complex.
'Famous last words’, he thought.
